Rhode Island Red caught foot in feed bag sometime on Friday, died from exhaustion. No zip tie on either leg, 2008 chicks had white zip tie on right leg, 2009 chicks had black zip tie on left leg.
I may cull the oldest hens soon, convert to cat food/stew. Yes, I've been talking about this for years (December 5, 2008, January 10, 2009, June 24, 2009 posts talk about culling flock of older hens - suggest that I not keep hens older than 6 years old).
Current flock:
4 Rhode Island Reds 1 3 year old, 3 1 year old
1 Barred Rock 3 years old
5 Silver laced Wyandotte 2 9 year old, 3 1 year old
3 Americauna 3 1 year old
Will be adding 4 Barred Rock, 1 Rhode Island Red on July 18. Chick order will include 25 organic meat birds too (fryer special from McMurray's). Buy 50# organic starter feed. 3x 50# organic feed, yields 100# organic chicken meat at $120 feed cost -> $1.20/pound for organic meat!
Assuming older birds are culled/die my 2012 flock would be:
5 Barred Rock 1 4 year old and 4 pullets
4 Rhode Island Reds 1 4 year old, 2 2 year old, 1 pullet
3 silver laced Wyandotte 3 2 year old
3 Americauna 3 2 year old
15 hen flock.
2012 flock age distribution:
5 pullets
8 2 years old
2 4 years old
Egg production in 2012 should be very strong. Pullets should begin production around February (6 months after hatching is January 18)...
4 year old hens still produce well. weekly production should be on order of 70 eggs/week or about 6 dozen/week by end of March 2012.
should have no new hens in 2013 (may buy meat birds, 1 or 2 layers if there is some attrition. want flock under 16 birds. Would like some additional Americauna hens at some point, green/brown ratio of 3/12 is a bit low, 5/10 would likely mean at least one green egg every day during laying season.
